U.S. Army Recruitment for Foreigners

The primary program for non-citizens is the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program. However, as of February 2024, MAVNI is currently under review and might be discontinued.

If MAVNI becomes unavailable, explore the enlistment process for U.S. citizens. This might be an option if you plan to pursue a U.S. citizen.

While some foreigners can join the U.S. military, it’s important to understand the limitations and specific requirements:

Eligibility

  • You must have a U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card). Joining the military cannot be the sole purpose of obtaining a Green Card.
  • You must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • You must generally be between 17 and 28 years old to enlist (18 with parental consent).

Once you have your Green Card, reach out to a U.S. military recruiter. They can be found online through official military websites or by visiting your local recruiting office.

Application Process

There isn’t a dedicated website solely for foreign recruitment. It’s recommended to contact a local U.S. military recruiter to discuss your eligibility and explore your options. They can guide you through the specific process and answer your questions in detail.

  • You will undergo medical examinations, fitness tests, and a written aptitude test to assess your suitability for military service.
  • Obtaining a Security Clearance

NOTE:

  • Non-citizens can only enlist in the military, not become officers.
  • Serving honourably in the military for a specific period can expedite the path to U.S. citizenship.
